Children with special needs

In Kenya, nearly 2 million children aged from 0 to 14 years are living with a disability. People with disabilities want to be a part of society. It becomes a possibility when society secures and includes the rights of people with disabilities. We are working to help along the process.

The project of the rights and well-being of people with disabilities

In collaboration with the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) towards improving the conditions for children with special needs and their parents. Some of the children we work with have congenital disorders, while others has sustained injuries during their work at the landfill in Kibarani.

The children live in one of Mombasa’s poorest slums. We work with rehabilitation, nutritional guidance, and care.

We also support our local collaborators in advocacy aimed at breaking down prejudices and marginalization of people with disabilities.

A very specific result is that several parents have received support to establish a small business. It gives them an income of about 1500 shillings a week. They can now support their family while being able to bring their children to work. In this way, their children get to go outside their homes, while the parents show that you can easily participate in the local community, even if you have a special need.

Read our board member's stories from the project in The magazine for young people with special needs and here.

”In spite of the tabu surrounding disability, the parents show such strong will, it is truly inspiring ”
